Who's trash is who's treasure?

“Gratitude looks to the Past and love to the Present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.”
C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

We have all heard the clay pot analogy, how God shapes us, forms us and puts us in the fire.  He gave me a picture of a block of clay sitting on a work bench while the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit move around the table, each doing their part as they work together to shape us into His image.

What was a square lump of clay slowly takes the shape of a real man.  Though in pain from the transformation, he notices the scraps being thrown into a glass garbage can.  He can clearly see his past, his pride, his deceit and anger all piled on top of each other and he decides when he is a finished work, he will offer to discard the trash in a far away place.  But when he is finished, he is surprised by the conversation.
"Lord, may I take the trash and get rid of it?"
"No."  He closes the lid and places a lock on it.
"Lord, what are you going to do with it."
"It's not what I will do with it, Son, it is what you are to do with it,"  He hands the man a key to the lock.  "This is the only key.  You are the only one who can open that can and take out what we together have put in there.  You must keep it near you, not to be looked at unless you call on me to look at it with you.  It's kept as a reminder not of who you were, but what you have come through.  I must warn you to keep it locked.  There are others, the enemy, demons, non-believers, and your sisters and brothers in Christ who will try to retrieve the things that hurt you most.  They can only be granted access by you and you alone."
"But Lord, it's glass.  They can see it anyway."
"Yes.  This takes the power away.  They can see it, but they can't touch it.  The only way your past and character defects can harm you is if you or someone allowed by you takes it out and puts it back on you.  Jealousy, insecurity, fear, are all reasons they want you to continue to be who they knew you to be.  To see that your trash can is full reminds them that theirs is empty because they have chosen not to use it for whatever reason.  Before you judge them, realize that you will also be tempted to dig into another mans past and remind him of it."
"Why can't they just leave it alone?"
"You see, your trash is the enemy's treasure.  Keep it locked."
"So I have to carry this with me for the rest of my life on earth?"
"No, but very few, very few ever give it away.  They may take out a few items, but rarely is it all completely given never to be taken back."
"Give it away?  Who would I give it to?"
     "Me."

“Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow. So one hundred worshipers [meeting] together, each one looking away to Christ, are in heart nearer to each other than they could possibly be, were they to become 'unity' conscious and turn their eyes away from God to strive for closer fellowship.”
A.W. Tozer, The Pursuit of God
